There is something so special about seeing children connect with their indigenous food roots. As part of my web series, “Unsung Culinary Heroes of Ghana”, I spent a beautiful afternoon at Fair View Educational Center in Agona-Central to teach the pupils about our local superfood “pearl millet”.

Together, we explored the magic of millet, with a lot of laughter and a little flour. The pupils and I made a yummy batch of golden millet mini cakes, paired with diced pineapples, banana coins, and some bright red watermelon triangles.

The highlight of all the schools I have visited is watching the excitement and fun the pupils have while garnishing the millet pastries they participated in making.

The next stage of the class is enjoying healthy millet snacks and singing Che Che Kule to wrap up the cooking class. This delightful experience always reminds me that healthy snacking is truly at its best when it’s fun to prepare and share with others.
